Presided over by the imposing Ol Deani volcano, this colorful little town is a popular overnight stop for visitors to the region’s many game parks. The town offers a variety of activities, including a visit to the bustling market, beer tasting at a local brewery, a visit to a traditional Iraqi farm or a guided walk through the Ngorongoro forest in search of waterfalls and elephant caves. Whether you’re looking for cultural visits, hiking or cycling, an authentic rural Tanzanian experience or simply a break between safaris, this underrated town has a lot to offer.
Lake Manyara National Park
The 330 km2 Lake Manyara National Park, located on the main road to Ngorongoro, is renowned for the variety of its landscapes and the richness of its wildlife. You first pass through a small acacia forest, home to numerous baboons and exotic birds, before crossing the plains, often populated by herds of buffalo, and arriving at Lake Manyara. Elephants and giraffes can be seen at close quarters, with the occasional lion lounging on the branch of an acacia tree, for which the park is famous! At certain times of the year, the shores of the lake are populated by thousands of pink flamingos, as well as numerous pelicans, fish eagles, sacred ibises, crowned cranes and marabouts. Groups of hippos can be seen, sometimes out of the water. Over 400 species of birds live here, a birdwatcher’s delight.

The region is home to the traditional Datoga and Hadzabe tribes, primitive nomadic tribes closely related to the South African Bushmen. This “bushmanoid” people of hunter-gatherers and nomads still survives in this part of the world. This will be a unique and powerful experience, an encounter with these semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers. Here, life is organized around bow hunting for the men and gathering for the women. You’ll visit their homes and workshops, as well as a local forge and onion farm. Picnic lunch on this day. Tarangire National Park
Covering an area of 2,600 square kilometers, it lies in the Masai steppe not far from Lake Manyara and the Rift Valley. The landscape of Tarangire National Park is very different from that of other reserves. Situated at a much lower altitude, it benefits from a warm, humid climate that develops a wide variety of vegetation, including the profusion of gigantic baobabs that are one of the park’s main attractions. Tarangire is a magnificent place to visit: in the dry season, huge processions of animals head for the river to quench their thirst. The latest census figures are impressive: 30,000 impala, 3,000 elephants, 25,000 wildebeest, 6,000 buffalo, to name but a few. The park is also rich in cat and bird life. It is a dry-season retreat for most of the wildlife of southern Maasai country, and belongs to the same ecosystem as Manyara. At the start of the short rainy season in October-November, animal movements start from the river. Wildebeest, zebra, Thompson’s gazelle, buffalo, eland and hartebeest migrate eastwards, spreading out over an area of more than 20,000 km2. They then return south and spend the dry season (July to October) concentrated around the Tarangire River until the next rains begin.
