CHICAGO

CAPITAL OF THE MIDWEST

By Jonathan Gloutnay, Director of coach bus travel

The third largest city in the U.S., Chicago is relatively young when compared to Boston and New York. Still, Chicago is full of endless treasures, just waiting to be discovered.

Did you know that Chicago is home to the starting point of legendary Route 66? With an urban landscape rich in both modern and old-school architecture, it’s plain to see why Chicago is a city unlike any other. Its strategic location alongside Lake Michigan also procures some of the most breathtaking views you’ve ever seen!

From the Skydeck at the top of the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower, you can take in spectacular views spanning the City, the Plains of Illinois and Lake Michigan. Braver souls can also step out onto The Ledge, the glass-floor balcony extending out from the Skydeck! When it comes to good food, Chicago has clearly earned bragging rights. There are tons of restaurants to choose from with a variety of dishes to suit every taste and budget. Just make sure you try the signature deep-dish pizza! And, while you’re there, you will also want to indulge in some delectable gourmet sweet/salty popcorn at Garrett Popcorn Shops, established in 1949. There’s nothing better!

Chicago’s downtown core, commonly referred to as The Loop, has several must-see places to visit. First off, there’s Millennium Park, which offers a wide range of free outdoor concerts. Just a hop, skip and jump away, you can also check out the Cloud Gate—a cool-looking iconic bean-shaped sculpture you’ll want to photograph from every angle! But, above all, you won’t want to miss the Chicago Riverwalk. Its canal and lift bridges are as synonymous with Chicago as Central Park is with New York. Stroll along the Magnificent Mile, recognized for its amazing nightlife, high-end boutiques, brand name shops and architecture.

With over 70 museums of all sorts, beautiful fountains, endless green spaces and 45 km of beaches along Lake Michigan, Chicago has nothing to envy of other major North-American cities. In fact, thanks to its avant-garde urban vibe, Chicago rivals just about any other city you can think of. On top of it all, Chicago is one of the cleanest and quietest cities around. You’ll understand what we mean when you see the public transportation and many taxis running on hybrid energy. This considerably reduces noise pollution and makes the city more eco-friendly. You’re sure to love it!

One more thing you’ll want to add to your list is a game or two, whether it’s watching the Cubs or White Sox at baseball, the Blackhawks at hockey or the Bears at football.

If you’re looking for a new destination and eager for great discoveries, I promise you Chicago won’t disappoint. You’ll be under its charm in no time. In fact, you’re bound to be sad to leave, and soon be dreaming of the day you get to visit again.
