Written by: Yoni S - - April 30, 2024Short but amazing !
I didn't get time to spend more than 2 nights at the Club Med Val Thorens but the experience was crazy, thanks to the festive atmosphere. I make a very special thank to the whole GO teams of Val Thorens. And in particular to : Yassine who perfectly took care of making up my room during this two days, Joihner, very professional receptionist, who took care of my check-in somewhere around midnight after an one-hour drive under heavy snow ! He took care of all for me so that I could feel quickly comfortable. It was really appreciated. All my best to the Club Med Val Thorens team for the season ending.

Club med Val Thorens
We loved Club Med overall – it was our first time to visit and it was glorious. We loved how we had bracelets that were our room and ski locker keys. Super easy check-in where we got our ski passes at the same time. The luggage service was wonderful – it was all delivered to our rooms and ski lockers without us having to do anything. The food was mostly great with amazing desserts, although my husband did have a short bout of gastrointestinal distress after lunch midweek. He also found a hair in the oatmeal one morning. Otherwise, the choices were amazing and included a huge diversity. Desserts were unbelievable both in quantity and quality. The serving staff at the main restaurant we ate every meal at was fantastic, super attentive and courteous especially in the evening. We loved the wine service, beer and water with and without gas on tap. Our only complaint was the fancy restaurant– the service wasn’t great, those at our table who ordered fondue didn’t get the salads and meats others in our party at other tables got, and desert never arrived at all. There was a nurse on sight which was nice, because there were SO MANY injured guests at the hotel. The bar was fantastic. There was one bartender, Etem, who was very attentive to us and our group. He went out of his way to keep drinks in our hands and made great conversation. It was disappointing that there was an extra charge for the hot tub and it required reservations. However, the spa was lovely – I had a great massage with Puttu who was amazing. The front desk staff was helpful, responsive and accommodating. We appreciated the laundry room, although it was a minor hassle getting coins to use it – plan ahead for having 8 Euro in coin per load (5 for wash and 3 for dry) and bring your own laundry detergent. There is a nice line in the shower/tub you can hang dry some things on. The ski locker area was great and opened right onto the snow. Skiing in and out was so great although the condition of the snow in and out was atrocious – super choppy, icy and slushy and very hard for me to navigate. We loved our room. We had a balcony view of the entire mountain range and we could see the ski in/out area. The room was cleaned everyday and the housekeeping staff were very friendly. I had to call for extra pillows and towels twice but they did arrive. We couldn’t figure out how to work the tub drain stopper for several days but finally an engineer came to the room to show us – embarrassing lol, but might be helpful to have a sign or instructions for Americans. The toiletries all smelled like roses and were always full. Super nice to have shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion all in the same scent. The large towel warmer in the bathroom was divine. It served us well not only for towels but also for warming up/drying out our ski gear after coming in from the slopes. As for the skiing, which is what brough us there, the runs were extremely busy and full of reckless boarders and skiers who caused many injuries. Several members of our party were injured due to loss of control and carelessness of others. Club Med was full of injured guests wearing casts and braces. I’ve never skied anywhere so full or so hectic. The conditions were late season, so very slushy and choppy on the lower runs, especially around the hotel ski in and out areas. One day the wind was so harsh at the summit it was hard to see and ski. Our first day was a white out with ice and sleet pelting us. There was rain mixed with some of the snow on 2 days. The snow was better at higher altitudes but still really torn up from so many people. It didn’t appear that anything was groomed anywhere, although we did see the groomers working the slopes in the evenings. The lifts were fine but the lines were insane with a lot of aggressive behavior making it hard to stay together and get into line. The giant gondolas that fit 50 people going to the summit were wild = I’ve never stood in something like a packed New York City subway with skis and boards in my face. They were very hard to get on because of all the pushing and shoving in lines. Ski school was a disaster. The groups were far too large and we didn’t learn a thing about getting around the mountains. The first day I was put into a much lower group than my ability level and it was miserably slow and too easy. The second day I switched groups and Jean-Luc the leader was incredibly rude and disrespectful to everyone in the group, 6 of whom were with the party I was gtravelling wtih. He yelled “what are you doing?” when I joined the group and said ”this is good 2A!” In his attempt to give pointers to other members of our group he said “don’t ski like that, everyone will laugh at you.” Also “you look like you are pooping. You must ski sexy not poopy.” We saw Jean Luc strike a skier going too fast through our group in the back with his ski pole after which a shouting match ensued between them. My experience was so horrific with Jean-Luc that I didn’t want to ski the next day. I went to speak in person with the ski school manager and she implied it was all my fault and thanked me for sharing. Her haughty and rude behavior compounded my feelings of frustration with the entire situation. I decided to ski on my own after that and things got better. I learned on my own how to identify run names and used the map the front desk very grudgingly provided. The “guides” taught me nothing about any of that. In summary the skiing was some of the worst conditions I’ve encountered in my life. The ski guides were terrible. I shall never return to Val Thorens ever again after such a miserable experience on those slopes. My husband is a much better skier than I so he was in another group. They were able to get to less populated parts of Les Trois Vallee, so he had a better time than I did. His group was quite large and they got zero coaching on skiing or navigating the place. The village is quite small, but we had all we needed at Club Med, so it was fine. We did visit it twice for a little shopping and to have a beer at the highest pub in Europe – the Frog. The village was so small we walked, but there was a shuttle available from Club Med. There’s also a gondola across the street from Club Med, which is a nice way to get back without having to ski on the bad runs to get there. We travelled with Tampa Ski club so there were 34 others with us. We had a dinner reservation for our group every night in the same area so we got to hang out as much as we liked. We also usually all met after skiing/ before dinner in the bar. It was perfect. Club Med was better than I expected with a few exceptions noted above. The ski area itself was far more crowded and dangerous than I expected. It was a great experience to be in the Alps – they are so steep and imposing and it was my first time to see them. Skiing down a run looking at Mt. Blanc was epically cooler than I ever expected.

The best stay yet!
My 15th stay at Club Med Val Thorens, that says enough ... my latest stay under the expert eye of Chef De Village Maxime was my most perfect experience so far. Spotless service and attention to detail, the food offering was superb, fun, tongue in cheek entertainment, comfortable rooms , ESF guides who ensure a perfect week skiing ..... and then 40cm of powder in April ... what's not to love?
