Whitewater
AUTHENTIC AND LAID BACK!
I had the opportunity to visit Whitewater once several years ago. A telemark skiing enthusiast, I had been following a group of pros during a run at Red Mountain the evening before when I took the end of a pitch a little too fast and ended up twisting my leg something serious. I was sure I’d have to cancel my plans to go to Whitewater the next day. (Oh, and, just another small detail—the area was hit with a wonderful 40 cm of snow that very night!) Early the next morning, Éric, a physiotherapist from the group brought me to the gym so I could warm up my muscles with a half-hour session on the exercise bike, constantly repeating: “You just have to come! You can’t miss this!”.
Always easily swayed, I decided to join the group. To this day, I still have Éric to thank for it! The insanely deep powder, perfectly groomed trails (albeit less steep than other B.C. mountains), endless glades you could practically get lost in, the mountain’s laid-back and practically anti-commercial atmosphere, and outstanding ski lodge food make Whitewater one of my top 5 picks for world’s best ski destinations.
Once a hidden gem, Whitewater is no longer a closely guarded secret. As a result, the resort decided to make some much-needed investments in 2017. The old Summit Chair has been replaced with a new fixed-grip quad chair, both the original Day Lodge and the Glory Lodge have been revamped and expanded, as have the parking lots. But, despite all of the upgrades, the mountain’s authentic and laid-back atmosphere still remains—along with its 40 feet of annual snowfall!
