Sölden: 4 mountain peaks over 3,000 metres in altitude
Sölden is both the largest and highest ski area in Austria. Every October since 2000, the Rettenbach Glacier has hosted the first race of the FIS World Cup. This honour clearly attests to the longevity and reliability of this destination’s ski season.
In addition to this, a restaurant featuring panoramic windows is currently being built at the foot of the Rettenbach Glacier and should be ready for the 2017–2018 season. Over the last few years, new lifts featuring some of the most spectacular architecture have been greeting skiers at the Gaislachkogl and the Giggijoch. And then there’s the futuristic Ice-Q restaurant, which was featured in the James Bond movie Spectre. This spectacular restaurant sits at the summit of the glacier and is combined with the Gaislachkogl gondola station.
Ötzti, a 5,300-year-old hunter (and Europe’s oldest naturally preserved mummy), was found in a glacier in the area in 1991. Today, Sölden is better known for hunters of a completely different kind—those in search of abundant snow and powder!
