Les Arcs and La Plagne
The Winning Pair
By Robert Choquette and Marilyn Griffiths, Special Contributors
With Mont Blanc as a backdrop, Les Arcs and La Plagne form, under the Paradiski umbrella, one of the world’s largest ski destinations. They’re linked by the 200-passenger Vanoise Express cable car, both feature efficient lift networks and are blessed with massive verticals. Between the two resorts, every ability level from beginner to the most aggressive is catered to. With two glaciers and extensive snowmaking on the lower slopes, snow coverage is reliable.
La Plagne and Les Arcs may be neighbours, but their personalities are worlds apart.
Les Arcs’ lift-accessed alpine terrain is vast and varied, both on and off piste. Although the resort caters to all ability levels, the terrain provides easy access to genuine, challenging steeps—and since that’s the type of skiing we personally like best, Les Arcs is where we choose to stay.
Les Arcs features four villages. Set in the trees, Arc 1600 is the original, and is a rather quiet spot. Arc 1800 is the largest and features a wide range of shops and eateries. Intrawest’s Arc 1950 is the new stylish settlement, while Arc 2000, the highest, is typically blessed with the best snow.
