The Golf Capital of Mexico

Conversation with Antoine Laroche, gendrongolf’s Product and Group Director By Eve Boissonnault, Journalist and Author

Located at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, the culmination of a stretch of land bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Sea of Cortés to the east, the municipality of Los Cabos has become an extremely popular destination over the last decade. Los Cabos is synonymous with breathtaking crystal blue landscapes and, being the official Golf Capital of Mexico, has reason to boast about its spectacular greens Of course, good news travels fast—and it wasn’t long before Los Cabos’s reputation had residents to the North hopping on direct flights towards this fabulous destination. This golfer’s paradise has 15 or so golf courses carved right out of the rough desert terrain. Antoine Laroche clearly agrees, stating: “The landscape here is a perfect blend of ocean, rugged hillside and desert, and is unlike anything else you’ll experience in the golfing world.”

The all-inclusive formula provides absolutely everything you need: flight, hotels, meals and rounds of golf. All that’s left to do is be ready for fun! Located to the east, in San José del Cabo, the Secret Puerto Los Cabos hotel is an absolute five-star dream. The streamlined white-stucco buildings, intertwined with architectural pools overlooking the ocean and the greens, paint the perfect portrait of the ideal vacation. It’s also located only steps away from the Puerto Los Cabos golf course, which Antoine tells us “is an absolute must when golfing in Los Cabos. And, the best part is, it’s not even the most expensive course.”

Antoine also suggests “the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort, a 5-star hotel erected in the middle of a vast desert beach, for a less expensive option. The isolated nature of this charming resort helps create a wonderfully intimate atmosphere. As an added bonus, only hotel guests are permitted to play the Quivira, a brand new course (with all the perks) offering absolutely breathtaking views.”

“If we focus solely on golf,” states Antoine, “I would definitely put Cabo del Sol’s Ocean Desert at the top of the list—simply because it’s the most beautiful course in the region and a true conceptual gem designed by none other than Jack Nicklaus. Another contender is Club Campestre, for its fabulous cactus decor, and the Cabo Real, for its championship course status. Any of these three would be a fabulous choice.”

As far as other attractions are concerned, one photo-worthy landmark worth the trip is the Arch of Los Cabos, a distinctive natural rock formation carved over time by the tides and the wind. While you’re there, be sure to visit its land-locked port. Since Los Cabos is historically recognized as one of the biggest tuna and marlin fishing towns, you’ll no doubt already know what to choose from the menu. Buen Provecho!
