A GOLFING AND CULTURAL ADVENTURE
By Carlo Blanchard, Golf Analyst for RDS and Golf Pro at Club de golf Le Portage
A favourite among couples
Extremely popular with couples—or anyone who wants to combine superb golfing with fascinating cultural discoveries—Costa del Sol is the absolute perfect spot. I had the chance to experience this glorious destination for myself last October… and I loved it so much that I can’t help but book another getaway again this year! It’s always a sure bet!
Absolutely breathtaking scenery
You’ll experience some of the most stunning views you’ve ever seen as you play the many courses in the suburb of Marbella, a gorgeous seaside town bordered by the Mediterranean. Surrounded by picturesque scenic views of the ocean in the distance or the panorama of endless mountain landscapes, you might find it hard keeping your eye on the ball! All of the courses we tried provided excellent playing conditions and a fair bit of challenge, without being too difficult. The Valle Romano condos in Estepona, located across the golf course bearing the same name, are spacious, comfortable and fully equipped for those who prefer to dine in a few nights. Note that packages include a full buffet breakfast, with all the trimmings, every morning.
Dry, mild climate
The climate in Costa del Sol, also known as Costa del Golf, is pleasantly dry and mild. With seemingly endless sun, short sleeves are definitely the norm on the golf course—practically year round!
Cultural discoveries abound
There are so many reasons I love Spain—the beauty of its surroundings, the clean air, the perfect climate, the quality of the courses and the friendly nature of the Spaniards. You’ll always feel welcome in this country of boundless discoveries, Brimming with as much energy as it is old-world charm. What could be better than enjoying a complete change of scenery, while still benefiting from all the luxuries of the modern world? If you aren’t afraid of heights, I suggest a stop in Ronda where you can admire the impressively monumental old bridge and indulge in all the offerings of its charming downtown core. Gibraltar is also a worthwhile visit along with Puerto Banus, where you can satisfy your need for some shopping, and perhaps a little drink or two. And don’t forget Málaga, the birthplace of Picasso and witness to the passing of many great civilizations, evidenced by a plethora of fascinating museums.
Steps away from Valle Romano, the tiny villages of Manilva and San Luis de Sabinillas are absolutely worth a visit. You’ll find a number of highly affordable seaside restaurants here, made even more appealing by the currently favourable exchange rate. We guarantee you’ll enjoy many pleasant evenings in good company.
So easy to get to
Another definite advantage is the fact that you can get to Spain on a direct flight from Montreal. Plus, the Malaga Airport is located less than an hour from Estepona. Driving is pleasant and easy thanks to superbly designed highways that allow for fast and safe travel. A golfing getaway to Spain is always sure to please!
