In 273 BC the Romans took the city and re-named it Paestum. Around the 9th century, after numerous attacks by the Saracens, Paestum was abandoned. The city was forgotten and gradually submerged, until the King of Naples discovered three remarkably preserved temples during work on the city's infrastructure in the 17th century. They are the three most remarkable examples of Greek temples in Italy.

The town was a flourishing community with over 25,000 inhabitants when it met with catastrophe on 24 August in the year 79 CE.
