HELICOPTER SKIING

The ultimate form of skiing and snowboarding
TLH and Last Frontier Heliskiing, British Columbia, Canada

By George Rosset, President of TLH and Last Frontier Heliskiing

Voyages Gendron and TLH/Last Frontier Heliskiing have teamed up to offer Voyages Gendron clients a new dimension of skiing and snowboarding.

16 years ago, I emigrated with my family from Switzerland to British Columbia, Canada, to fulfill my dreams of snowy winters filled with dry powder snow and vast untouched mountains in search of the best skiing of this planet.

Helicopter skiing/snowboarding is about freedom, maximum satisfaction and the best snow riding adventures on this planet. For a skier or a snowboarder, there is no feeling comparable to the sensation of carving down a fantastic, challenging slope or through spaced trees in pristine, untouched, light powder snow.

Ski Touring lets one experience this sensation, but the problem is that many hours of hard work climbing to the top of a mountain are usually followed by only one run. Too little of the sensations longed for in the busy lives of hard working professionals in our demanding times!

Helicopter skiing has solved this problem and lets one experience about 10 to 20 untouched powder runs a day. Heli-Skiing is offered in many countries on this planet but nowhere in the world is the combination of terrain, weather, temperature and snow conditions as ideal for Heli-Skiing as in the numerous unpopulated mountain ranges of British Columbia. This is the place where 80 to 85 % of worldwide Heli-Ski guests find their powder paradise.

While it is true that experienced skiers and snowboarders find the fulfillment of their dreams while Heliskiing here, with lots of challenging terrain, never ending tree runs and deep powder, it is also a fact that Heliskiing is not just for the experts.

With the introduction of fat skis during the last decade, every good intermediate skier can now indulge their senses with the experience of Heliskiing.

Our guests are grouped according to their skiing abilities and their desired pace. This enables everyone to fully enjoy Heliskiing at their own level. It is important to choose your Heliskiing operator by taking various factors into consideration; you may not want to Heliski with an inexperienced operator or with too large of an organization that cannot leave enough freedom to their guests.

TLH Heliskiing is now getting ready to start its 16 th season, while our sister company, Last Frontier Heliskiing, is looking forward to its 11 th season. Long enough to have been able to accumulate a wealth of experience and young enough to remain flexible and put the needs of their customers up front; just after the most important factor, safety! While other Heliski operations often ski with 3 or 4 groups of 11 skiers/snowboarders in a Bell 212 helicopter, TLH Heliskiing set a new standard 15 years ago by always only skiing with 2 groups of 11 skiers/snowboarders per Bell 212 helicopter. This enables the groups access to more varied, untouched terrain during any given day and to pick the best runs and the best snow for every single group. It also leaves everyone the freedom to carve their turns in untouched slopes that haven’t been tracked by too many skiers/snowboarders. Another bonus; waiting times are practically unheard of here!

At Last Frontier Heliskiing, our sister company, we have two operations in Northern BC that share the largest Heliski terrain on the planet. The terrain is challenging and suited for good to expert skiers/snowboarders and arguably offers the deepest snow pack of any Heliski area in BC. Runs of up to 6,000 vertical feet on glaciers, in wide open bowls and through magnificent scenery are supplemented by exciting natural tree runs. Here, thanks to our northerly location, even a generally low snow winter is usually a winter with dream conditions.

Last Frontier’s Bell II Lodge base is offering excellent accommodation in a remote setting and the luxury of skiing with only two powerful Bell 407 helicopters with 3 groups of 5 guests each. Ripley Creek, our new location in the little mining town of Stewart (on the border of Alaska), offers an outstanding price/performance ratio for strong skiers/snowboarders with a maximum of 2 groups of 9 skiers/snowboarders in a Bell 204 ½ helicopter.

So, whether you are an advanced intermediate or an expert skier or snowboarder, we have the right Heli-Skiing package for you. You don’t need to be an expert to experience the best skiing in the world. Call Voyages Gendron and discover what is available for you and book the vacation of a lifetime…. you will want to repeat it again and again!
