INTRODUCTION

You have never had the opportunity to visit the Tunisia? It's a perfect harmony between the sun, sea, mountain, desert, history, and culture. Such perfect harmony is Tunisia with its profound sense of hospitality.

A country of extreme contrasts, Tunisia is practically the only country in the world which can offer its visitors the impressive Sahara desert within easy reach of beautiful beaches, thickly-forested mountains and bustling towns and cities.

The Sahara covers more than half of the Tunisian territory. The northern part contains human settlements in traditional urban agglomerations, mountain villages and oases. The further one travels south, the more defined the Saharan character becomes. Apart from protected species of wild flora and fauna, the deep southern region has very few human traces - wells for the survival of nomads, old caravans and fortifications.

Despite the variety of its landscape, the Tunisian Sahara is a homogeneous natural environment. Rich natural and cultural sites from time immemorial bear witness to the Sahara’s ability to maintain different forms of human presence. The sites have a spectacularly gripping beauty, occasionally emphasized by a sense of fragility. They offer a new opportunity to discover the Sahara and develop an environment-friendly cultural tourism.

A land of impressive silence, with its wide open spaces and amazing variety of landscape, the desert provides a soothing escape from the world. The desert has always welcomed man, whose imprints are visible everywhere. To have an idea about its fascinating power, let us recall what a desert hermit who once said: ‘There are sites so powerful that even when we come to visit them as tourists, we leave them as pilgrims.’

Whether in the shady Tabarka hills, on the Djerba white sand beaches, under the sweet smelling Hammamet olive and orange trees, or in front of El Kantaoui marina, Tunisia has reserved for you its most beautiful green areas: eight golf courses designed by internationally renowned architects and set in exceptionally beautiful natural sites. The courses are open throughout the year and offer a variety of enchanting landscapes. During golf games with different degrees of difficulty, the courses will give you an enjoyable golfing experience in Tunisia.

If you want a sea as crystal-clear as warm, and if, for you, the sea has no other right but to be blue, then sail to the Tunisian shores. You will discover everything the country can offer to sea travelers: creeks set in green sites, long fine and golden sand beaches, and lively fishing ports with multi-coloured boats. From Tabarka to Djerba, a 1,300km-coastline welcomes you in the hospitality that Tunisians have always reserved to sailors from different countries since Antiquity.

Traveling on the deep and narrow roads to explore mountain oases and cross sand or salt stretches in search for a prehistoric vestige may look like an adventure. If your quest for strong emotions is not satisfied, you can plan your trip like an expedition with plenty of activities to choose from: rallies, long-distance rallies, sand yachting, Chott marathons, hot air balloons, horseback riding, or camel-back riding…

Summers are hot and dry. Sometimes a hot wind, the sirocco, blows for a few days from the Saharan regions and can reach the north and even Sicily. This wind considerably increases the temperature, which remains bearable because of the lack of humidity. Winter, the rainy season, is not very cold. However, rainy days are few, and rainfall does not exceed 400 mm annually, except in the north-western mountain areas, where it can reach 1,000 mm in some parts. Winters are sunny. The climate is usually suitable throughout the year for cultural and sporting activities such as trekking, excursions, sailing, scuba-diving, golf and so on.
